A digital thread is a connected, traceable chain of data that links a part's engineering definition (CAD, PMI, requirements) through its manufacturing plan and execution to its as-built and as-inspected record, so any stage can be traced back to and reconciled with the others.1 The term originated in aerospace and defense programs seeking to connect design, manufacturing and sustainment data that had historically lived in disconnected systems.

A digital thread is an infrastructure goal, not a single piece of software: it usually spans a PLM system for design data, an ERP or MES for production data, and whatever connects them, rather than being one product a factory buys.
