Material removal refers broadly to any manufacturing process that reaches a part's finished geometry by cutting away stock material, as opposed to additive processes (which add material) or forming processes (which reshape it without removing it). Milling, turning, drilling, grinding and EDM are all material removal processes.

Machining is one broad category of material removal; grinding and EDM are also material removal processes but not usually called machining in the narrow sense.
