Metrology

Metrology is the science and practice of measurement: the methods, instruments and standards used to determine dimensions, form and other physical properties accurately and traceably. In manufacturing, metrology underlies inspection methods from a simple caliper measurement to a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), and includes the practice of calibrating instruments so their measurements are trustworthy.

Why metrology capability limits verifiable tolerance, not just machining capability

Assuming a factory that can machine a tight tolerance can automatically verify it; measuring a tolerance reliably can require metrology capability (instrument precision, calibration, environment) beyond what simply producing the feature requires.

Is metrology the same as inspection?

Inspection is the activity of checking a part against requirements; metrology is the underlying science and practice of measurement that makes inspection meaningful and traceable.

Why does instrument calibration matter?

Because an uncalibrated instrument can give a confident but wrong reading, which is why traceable calibration is central to metrology.

Can a factory machine a tolerance it can't verify?

In principle yes, which is a real risk; verifying a tight tolerance may require metrology capability the factory doesn't have in-house.
