Programming time is the time a CNC programmer spends preparing the CAM program: choosing the tool path strategy, selecting tools, setting cutting parameters and simulating the result, before the machine ever runs the part. On a one-off or first-of-a-kind part it can be a substantial share of total cost; on a repeat order it is largely already done.
